Manitoba  

Extra early tomato adapted to zone 3 and less. For high altitudes, northern latitudes or if you simply want tomatoes early in the season. Bright red, slightly flattened, medium size. Compact plants. Bred in Manitoba, Canada. Determinate. 58 days.

Marianna's Peace     

Magnificent, large dark pink/reddish fruit with shiny skin and slightly ribbed shoulders. Dense flesh, really smooth and with a subtle, well balanced, sweet flavor. Highly praised. Non cracking, nice looking fruits (click photos). Tall, potato-leaf plants that can reach more than 2 m in height. Good production for a potato leaf. 80-90 days.

Marvel Striped    (Marvel Striped Zapotec)

Very large golden fruits weighing up to 1 kg, with very nice flesh marbled with yellow, orange and red streaks. Light, sweet flavor. Old zapotec variety originating from Oaxaca, Mexico, and cultivated since 1850. Very late. First fruits are not ready until september 1st here in zone 5. 100 days. Limited quantity.

Matt's Wild Cherry

Mint Julep   (Michael Pollan)  
          

Weirdly shaped, Green Zebra-type tomatoes on a multiflora plant. Click thumbnails for details. Different forms : egg, pear or heart-shaped. Medium size, 6 to 8 cm. Multiflora type, with loads of flowers, but only part of them turn into tomatoes, each cluster bearing from 10 to 20 fruits. Good acidic-tart flavor reminiscent of Green Zebra. Millefleur

Black variety with very nice, smooth fruits. Tomatoes are well-formed, with smooth skins and few defects. Good resistance to cracking. Taste is alos very nice. Oaxacan Jewel

This little gem from Oaxaca has a wonderfully intense fruity flavor. Exceptional. Bicolored, medium to large size fruits covered with very long petioles (left picture). Marbled flesh.  From the mountains of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico (zapotecs). One of the few bicolored that will develop its full taste even when grown in the north. Highly recommended. Some genetic variations in the leaf pattern: some plants have potato-leaf foliage and others have nornal leaves. 75 days.

Old German                               


Large bicolor tomato with sweet, low-acid marbled flesh. Large to very large (400 to 900 g). Great for slices (hamburger, sandwich) or in salads. Heirloom from the Mennonites in Virginia (USA, middle of 1800's). 80 days.

Orange Banana   
       

Orange paste type with sweet, fruity taste. Nice for making a novel orange tomato sauce but just as good for fresh eating. Flavor is highly praised by many. Shape is somewhat variable, from oval to elongated. About 8 cm long. The shade of orange on this tomato is nice, leaning towards a tangerine hue. Avoid excess watering to prevent blossom end rot. 85 days.

Orange Grape

Wonderfful orange grape tomatoes with very nice, sweet and fruity taste. Little gems growing in clusters of about 20 fruits. Fruit shape and size slightly differ from plant to plant, going from oval to almost pear-shaped and from 2,5 to 3 cm in lenght. But what does not change is their great taste. And eventhough they tend to crack and split towards the end of the season, they are still really worth it. Fun to grow. About 70 days.

Orangeheart            

Medium-size (6-7 cm), bright orange fruits with nice fruity flavor (especially when fully ripe). Round and slightly angular. Amazingly, in 2007 the cores of some Orangeheart tomatoes actually tasted like oranges! 87 days.

  Orange Strawberry

Large orange oxheart type, somewhat shaped like a strawberry. Flesh is very soft and silky, with few seeds. Low acidity. Big, tall plants. Some tomatoes are rounder than other. 80 days.

P20 Blue Tomato    (OSU Blue Tomato)              

An astonishing dark purple tomato coming from the breeding work of Jim Myers from Oregon State University (OSU). Green fruits turn gradually to dark purple when exposed to sunlight. Click thumbnails for details. The bottom half of the ripe tomatoes then turns red. Medium size, round fruits, about 5 to 7 cm. Pinkish red flesh, with subtle, aromatic and fruity flavor. Not bland. Foliage turns purple under cold conditions. Around 80-90 days. Aka OSU Blue tomato. Rare!

Pantano Romanesco    

Italian strain with rich, intense flavor. Fresh use or for canning and sauce. Sauce made with Pantano Romanesco tomatoes is renowned. Deep red fruits, slightly flattened and ribbed, quite firm, medium to large size (300-400 g). Vigorous plants with good production. Tomatoes can still retain their green shoulders while ripe. Like peaches, these fruits are covered with stunning fuzzy hairs. Yellow fruits with a pink blush. Some green stripes sometimes remain. Very nice looking fruit. Salad size. Thick skin. Very mild flavor.

Persimmon

Sweet and juicy orange tomatoes with low acidity. Taste is highly praised by many who have tried it. Round, medium to large. 80 days. Very limited supply.

Petitbec     (Doucet's Petitbec)                 

Quebec variety with bright red cherry tomatoes on small compact plants. Big clusters of 15 or more tomatoes. Cherry size, 3 to 3,5 cm in diameter, no cracking, stays for a long time on the plant. Keeps well. Tangy flavor with a tart aftertaste (similar to Rosabec, below).  Early, 60-65 days. Determinate. Bred in Quebec by Roger Doucet. New seeds.

Pink Ice

Pink Ponderosa

Old-fashioned pink tomato with mild flavor. Medium to large size, 400 to 900 g. Slightly flattened, dark pink. Meaty, few seeds, perfect for slices. Heirloom dating back to the 1800's. 80 days.

Pink Vernissage   
       

Cute little pink tomatoes covered with orange stripes. Looks very much like Violet Jaser and Topaz, but instead with deep pink skin. And like these two, it is quite early and productive. Round shape, 3 to 5 cm. Stripes start green and then turn to pale orange. 65 days.

Plum Lemon       

Cute tomatoes, looking just like small lemons. About 6 cm long. Lemon yellow turning to golden yellow. Light, fresh taste. Better picked when still firm and clear yellow. 80 days.

Polish Pastel

This one will slowly ripen while taking a rainbow of pastel colors. Very beautiful. Click thumbnails. Paste type, more or less pear shaped, about 10 cm long. Orange-yellow flesh with pink blush. Mild flavor, low acidity, gets a little sweet when fully ripe. 80 days. Hard to find, rare variety!

Powers    (Powers Heirloom)              

Beautiful, large yellow paste type with sweet flesh. Good fresh or for making a delicious yellow tomato sauce. Looks like a yellow version of Amish Paste (size and shape). An old Virginia Heirloom dating back to more than 100 years. 80-85 days.

Principe Borghese

Small determinate variety bearing clusters of large cherry tomatoes. This variety is used in Italy for drying. Take clusters and let them dry under the sun for some weeks, or use a dehydrator or just the oven. Also good fresh. 70 days.

Pruden's Purple

An earlier Brandywine type with large, dark pink fruits. Flavor is often considered superior than that of Brandywine. Better adapted for culture in Canada. One of the best tasting varieties in 2003. Open pollinated strain of grape tomato with excellent quality. Looks very much like the popular grape tomatoes sold in food markets. Nice smooth, shiny skin. Fruits are very firm. Excellent concentrated taste, very sweet and fruity.

Another multiflora subspecies covered with sprays of flowers followed by large clusters of small, pear shaped red fruits. One single cluster can bear more than 100 tomatoes.

Red Pear Franchi 

Large tomato in the shape of a flattened, ribbed pear. Similar to Zapotec pleated (Tlacolula) but red colored. Large size. From Italy. aka Red Pear Abruzense or Pyriform. Rare. 90-95 days.

Another type of Zebra tomato, this one has fiery red fruits covered with bright yellow bands. Round fruits, 6-7 cm, very uniform, and of a very nice quality. Good sweet flavor. Very productive.

The first cluster will bear more than 50 tomatoes! It will be actually so large and heavy that it will practically outgrow the rest of the plant. An oddity of nature, with cherry tomatoes that are partially fused together into one single fruit. You can easily separate the individual parts like garlic and get clove-like cherry tomatoes (right picture). Re Umberto

Old italian variety named after King Umberto. Paste type, like Roma and San Marzano, with oval shaped, 6 cm, deep red fruits. For sauces or fresh eating. This one will ripen very slowly on the plant. Richardson 
 

Large pink type being reported to reach huge sizes. Those grown in 2005 reached 11 cm wide and weighed up to 450 g (1 pound). Flattened, lobed fruits like the Watermelon Beefsteak variety. Very nice sweet flavor, well balanced and not too acid, a bit like Marianna's Peace. Also known as The Richardson Tomato. Late type, about 90 days. From the U.S. Rare!

  Roma Napoli

Determinate. Roma is the ultimate archetype of the italian tomato, with elongated red fruits. Red, meaty fruits, medium size, 55-60 g. For fresh eating or processing: sauce, ketchup, canning, etc. Good tolerance to VF. 75-85 days. Compact plants with good leaf cover. Fruits are similar to the commercial Roma tomatoes sold in markets.

Rosabec
